Volkswagen Won’t Introduce New Polo In India

Volkswagen has recently announced some significant decisions regarding its product lineup in the Indian market. These revelations came to light during the IAA Mobility show in Germany, where Thomas Schäfer, the CEO of Volkswagen, shared insights into the company’s strategy for India. One of the key pieces of information disclosed by Schäfer was regarding the new generation Volkswagen Polo. Regrettably for Indian consumers, the company has no plans to introduce this latest iteration of the popular hatchback in the Indian market.

The primary reason behind this decision is the global nature of the Polo. Given its international appeal, Volkswagen finds it impractical to modify the Polo to fit the sub-4-meter category, which is crucial for tax benefits in India. In addition to the Polo revelation, Schäfer also touched upon the absence of an MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) in Volkswagen’s Indian product lineup. Many had hoped that Volkswagen might leverage the MQB A0 IN platform to introduce a competitive MPV, possibly accommodating 7 or 8 passengers. However, these hopes have been dashed, as Volkswagen has confirmed that there are no plans to launch an MPV tailored for the Indian market.

While Volkswagen continues to focus on its existing lineup in India, including models like the Virtus and Tiguan, consumers seeking spacious MPVs will need to explore other options in the Indian automotive market. The new generation of Tiguan is expected to be revealed in the coming months and it is expected to be launched sometime next year in India as it is one of the important models of the German manufacturer. We can also expect some electric models from the International lineup to arrive in India too.
