The Electric Mercedes G Wagen Is Finally Here

Mercedes Benz has been working on the electric version of G Wagen or Geländewagen for some time now as the company gave us a preview of the EQG Concept since then the company has been showcasing the capabilities of the new model through various activities and teasers. After a lot of waiting, Mercedes Benz finally revealed the electric G Class as it is called the G 580 with EQ Technology, which is a lengthy name compared to other models. From the first look, it is exactly similar to a regular G Class as the company hasn’t tried anything fancy, which is a good thing.

The core reasons for the popularity of the G Class are its design and the off-road capabilities as Mercedes Benz has changed it. Some of the design tweaks for the electric G Class compared to the regular model include a closed grille with illumination while the hood has been slightly raised to improve airflow and the A-pillar has been redesigned too thus resulting in drag co-efficient to 0.44 cd compared to 0.48 cd for the regular model. Mercedes has also added an air-curtain to reduce drag and the signature spare wheel mounted at the rear wheel is optional as it can accommodate the charging cable and other things if the owner needs it.

The interior design of the electric G Class is exactly similar to the regular model with dual 12.3-inch screens one for the instrument cluster and the other for the infotainment system. Mercedes has given a 116 kWh massive battery pack for the electric G Wagen as four electric motors are placed on all four wheels and each motor produces 147 hp. The combined output is 587 hp of power and a massive 1165 Nm of torque. The gearbox is a two-speed unit and this specification is developed exclusively for G-Wagen as it won’t be used in any other models of Mercedes Benz.

The performance numbers are impressive as 0-100 kph comes up in just 5 sec, which is slightly slower than the high-performance AMG G63. The top speed is electronically limited to 180 kph. The electric SUV continues to use the same independent suspension setup as the ICE version along with a rigid rear axle. Mercedes offers virtual rather than mechanical locking differentials. The capabilities of the G580 are impressive as the maximum wading depth is 850 mm which is 100 mm more than the ICE G Class. The ground clearance is slightly lower than the regular ICE model because of the battery pack.

The electric G boasts impressive capabilities for off-road adventures. With the ability to conquer lateral slopes of up to 35 degrees and a generous 9.8 inches of ground clearance, it navigates rough terrain with ease. Its approach angle of 32.0 degrees, departure angle of 30.7 degrees, and breakover angle of 20.3 degrees ensure it’s prepared for challenging landscapes. While it can’t scale vertical surfaces, its capability to tackle a 100 per cent grade, equivalent to a 45-degree angle, demonstrates its prowess. Off-road features include a shiftable two-speed transmission for low-range mode and a crawl function for precision manoeuvring. The “G-Turn,” essentially a tank turn, allows the vehicle to rotate in place, aided by virtual differential locks enabled through torque vectoring. Adaptive adjustable dampers ensure a smooth ride, while the G-Steering function reduces the turning circle, aiding in tight situations. Mercedes will introduce the electric G Class in India too and we can expect it next year.
