Volkswagen To Develop Mass Market EV For India

The Electric Vehicle segment in India is growing at a good pace and manufacturers who adopted their models have had tremendous success. Earlier reports indicated that Volkswagen Group is planning to introduce electric vehicles in India. Initially, the company will introduce products from its global range and later models for the domestic market. The German manufacturer confirmed that the company is looking at developing a new mass-market electric vehicle for India but it will not be limited just to India as they are looking at export markets too.

Piyush Arora, MD and CEO, of Skoda Auto Volkswagen India, said “Our strategy for electrification in India would not be very different from our ICE strategy. Therefore, we would focus on both India-specific as well as global products for the Indian market. We are looking at a localized product to cater to the voluminous entry-level EV segment in India. It is something that we are evaluating, and it would also require significant investments.” This will be a huge boost for the Volkswagen Group for the next decade.

The company needs to invest more than three million euros in the development of this new mass-market vehicle but the volumes need to justify this new investment which is why exports are also key for the growth. The first mass-market electric vehicle is expected to be an SUV as it is currently the trend in the automobile industry. The first model will be a Volkswagen product and later Skoda will introduce its version Skoda is looking to localise the MQB A0 37 platform for the Indian market and it is expected to be introduced by 2026.
