Government Is Planning To Introduce IN Series

The Ministry of Road Transport and Safety is planning to introduce IN series registration in the country as currently the vehicles are registered in a particular state and the transfer of registration from one state to another is a big process, which takes lots of time. The government want to change this process and this is where the IN Series comes in as customers just need to pay road tax for two years and then renew it every two years.

Initially, the IN series will be a pilot project and it won’t be available for everyone as the government want to give a thorough study before introducing for the mass. As of now, the new IN series registration is available for defence personals, central and state government employees, public sector undertakings (PSUs) and private sector companies, which have an office in five or more Union Territories. This will be really helpful for lots of people who are working in other states but don’t want to register the car there.

Under the Sector 47 of Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, the person needs to re-register the vehicle to the state which they moved to after 12 months. This requires the customer to get NOC from the state and the tax paid in advance need to be re-impressed after the deduction. Like we said earlier, anyone who has done this will know that it is not a straightforward process even though the government has made most of the things to be done online.

The introduction of IN series also reduces the huge burden on new car buyers as road tax for 15 years is really high. For example, the road tax for the top-end Maruti Suzuki Swift in Kochi is around Rs. 1,00,000 but this for the next 15 years. With the IN Series, customers just need to pay the two years tax, which is much lower. This will attract more buyers to opt for this and it will be beneficial for the central government.
