BMW New Innovative Regenerative Suspension, Patent Filed

BMW has filed a patent at the German Patent Office for a new regenerative suspension system – As the name indicates it will be a redesigned structure of the suspension with added tech to harness electricity when going over bumps. In other words, road imperfections, potholes and speed bumps could replenish the future of BMW EVs. The idea is still in its patent stage and concerns about future EVs with larger ranges the idea is definitely worth exploring.

The suspension system will be able to generate electricity as the suspension absorbs the shock from the bump, while the suspension travels there is a clutch in there which allows the system to only capture the energy on the rebound stroke, in order to avoid damage which can cause by sudden jolts over the bumps the system uses a gear that controls the suspension movement, which multiplies the torque and rotation that is applied to the generator which will eventually help an EV to boost up its range as the EV travels across rough roads. As the world is moving to EV it emerges a need to reinvent and redesign traditional mechanical parts to absorb energy instead of wasting energy.

BMWs new suspension design harness energy from the suspension as it moves around rough roads and takes a bump then sent to the generator then the generator converts it to usable electricity which adds up more range to the EV and also it may use to control the vehicles roll through the corner, or increase resistance on one side to prevent lean which is somewhat similar to active roll mitigation system. If BMW could able to build this suspension system effectively it will be a step up in the EV. Hope BMW gets things done better in the future. It’s not yet clear how much extra range can be expected but it will be most likely a premium feature and also there is a possibility of featuring this regenerative suspension system on the brand’s new upcoming Neue Klasse platform.
