Volkswagen Officially Revealed Next-Generation Passat

Volkswagen has officially unveiled the highly anticipated ninth generation of its best-selling nameplate, the Passat, marking a significant leap in the evolution of this iconic vehicle. Following a legacy that began in 1973, the Passat has achieved remarkable success, with over 30 million units delivered worldwide. The 2024 Passat, known as the B9, debuts as a wagon-only model, as the sedan variant is retired. Built upon the advanced MQB Evo platform, which it shares with the upcoming next-generation Tiguan and Golf Mk8 facelift, the 2024 Passat Variant boasts enhanced dimensions compared to its predecessor.

With a length of 193.5 inches (4917 millimetres), the new Passat is notably longer by 5.7 inches (144 mm). Its width has increased by 0.8 inches (20 mm) to 72.9 inches (1852 mm), while the height remains relatively unchanged at 59.2 inches (1506 mm). The elongated wheelbase of 111.8 inches (2841 mm), extended by 1.97 inches (50 mm), contributes to the increased interior space. Visually, the new Passat exhibits a design aligned with VW’s electric ID models, embracing both familiarity and futuristic elements. Different trim levels – Passat, Business, Elegance, and R-Line – offer varying exterior aesthetics, enhanced by wheel options up to 19 inches in size. The rear features dynamic LEDs and a striking light bar.

Inside, the Passat B9 showcases a revolutionary departure from its predecessor. The majority of physical switches have been replaced by a 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system (upgradeable to 15 inches), centralizing control functions. The base model includes a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, replacing analog dials. The new model’s size increase is advantageous for both passengers and cargo. Rear legroom and luggage compartment capacity have expanded. The move of the gear selector to the steering column, akin to the ID.7, has liberated space between the seats, contributing to the augmented cargo area.

The powertrain lineup encompasses a broad array of options. Notably, the Passat now features a 1.5-liter eTSI mild-hybrid gasoline engine generating 148 horsepower (110 kilowatts). Additionally, conventional gasoline and diesel variants, as well as plug-in hybrid “eHybrid” models, offer diverse power outputs, culminating in the range-topping PHEV with 268 horsepower (200 kW) and an electric range of up to 62 miles (100 kilometres). The new Passat is also future-ready in terms of charging infrastructure, supporting DC fast-charging at 50 kW, allowing a 10 to 80 per cent charge in approximately 25 minutes.

This, coupled with its fuel capacity, yields an impressive total driving range of around 621 miles (1,000 kilometres). Enthusiasts and curious onlookers will have the opportunity to witness the debut of the 2024 VW Passat at the upcoming IAA Munich event. With its market introduction scheduled for the first quarter of the following year, the production of the new Passat will take place in Bratislava, Slovakia, alongside the new Skoda Superb, marking a new chapter in its storied history.
