The Shift in India’s Car Safety Standards: No Mandate for Six Airbags Anymore

In a significant development for the Indian automotive industry, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Nitin Gadkari, has declared that the mandate for six airbags in cars will no longer be enforced. This decision coincides with the launch of the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (BNCAP), set to take effect from October 1, 2023, which aligns with the latest Global NCAP standards. Gadkari explained, “We have introduced the BNCAP protocols, which demand six airbags for a 4- or 5-star rating. So, there is no need to mandate six airbags in cars now. It will automatically push OEMs to offer them.” This move reflects a shift in policy, as Gadkari had previously advocated for six airbags to become the standard in an effort to enhance vehicle safety.

In January 2022, the MoRTH issued a draft notification proposing the mandatory inclusion of six airbags in all new cars. However, strong opposition from the industry, particularly from Maruti Suzuki India, citing affordability concerns for entry-level models, prevented the regulation from being implemented by the original deadline of October 1, 2022. The subsequent delay allowed the automotive landscape to evolve, with consumers becoming increasingly safety-conscious.

Gadkari acknowledged this shift, stating, “Whatever models have six airbags, people may prefer to take that car. Now, it is up to the manufacturers and customers to decide.” Manufacturers offering six airbags have gained market share, emphasizing the industry’s response to changing consumer priorities. As the BNCAP safety tests come into play, the focus shifts from mandating airbags to encouraging manufacturers to adhere to safety standards that earn higher ratings. This approach not only fosters competition among automakers but also empowers consumers to make informed choices regarding the safety features of their vehicles, ultimately advancing road safety in India.
