Maruti Suzuki’s Export Move: 5-Door Jimny Heads to Japan and Beyond

Maruti Suzuki is set to make a significant move by exporting the highly anticipated 5-door Jimny to Japan. This decision marks a strategic shift from the earlier preference for the 3-door Jimny, initially unveiled in 2017. At the time, the 3-door variant generated substantial local interest but was never introduced to the Indian market. Maruti Suzuki believed that the 5-door version would be a better fit for the Indian market due to its enhanced practicality. The 5-door Jimny has garnered substantial international attention, particularly from markets like Africa, South America, and its home country, Japan.

C V Raman, the Chief Technology Officer at Maruti Suzuki, confirmed that the 5-door Jimny is destined for the Japanese market. He stated, “The 5-door Jimny will also be launched in Japan, but in some time.” India currently serves as the production hub for all 5-door Jimny models, including left- and right-hand drive versions. The Indian plant, which initially focused on manufacturing the 3-door Jimny, now exclusively produces the 5-door variant. Interestingly, it still retains the capability to produce the 3-door version if the need arises.

While the 5-door Jimny is gearing up for its debut at the Tokyo Motor Show, it is unlikely to return to the European market, be it in a 3-door or 5-door configuration. This is due to stringent emissions regulations in the European Union, which have made it challenging for Jimny to comply with the required standards. Maruti Suzuki’s decision to export the 5-door Jimny to Japan not only showcases the company’s global ambitions but also underscores the versatility and appeal of this compact SUV in diverse markets around the world. With its practicality and off-road capabilities, the 5-door Jimny is poised to make a substantial impact in international markets.
