Honda Inaugurates Third Assembly Line at World’s Largest Scooter Plant

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) has marked a significant milestone in its expansion strategy with the inauguration of the third assembly line at its two-wheeler manufacturing plant in Vithalapur, Gujarat. This state-of-the-art facility is Honda’s largest scooter-only plant globally and the annual production capacity is now up to 6.5 lakh units per annum after the inauguration of the new assembly line. The Vithalapur plant plays a crucial role in Honda’s global production network, particularly in the context of two-wheeler manufacturing.

The newly inaugurated assembly line is dedicated to manufacturing Honda’s popular scooters, including the iconic Activa, Dio, Activa 125, and Dio 125. These models have gained immense popularity in the Indian market and beyond. Moreover, the Gujarat plant houses a specialized engine line, serving as the foundation for producing global engines designed for 250cc plus two-wheelers. These engines cater to the robust demand from international markets such as Thailand, the United States, Europe, and Japan, further establishing India as a pivotal production hub for Honda’s global operations.

Beyond the strides in manufacturing capacity, the expansion at the Vithalapur plant has created additional employment opportunities. In line with a commitment to diversity and inclusion, HMSI aims to enhance the representation of women in the manufacturing area, contributing to a more balanced and inclusive workforce. Tsutsumu Otani, president, MD and CEO, HMSI, said: “To serve customers more efficiently with speed, undertaking this capacity expansion plan will increase HMSI’s total annual production volumes significantly. HMSI’s Gujarat plant produces scooter models for domestic as well as export markets, which will help us to continue leading the trend of scooters not just in India but across the globe.”
