Electric Vehicles Registration Surpass Diesel Vehicles In Ernakulam

Ernakulam was one of the biggest diesel markets in the country as customers prefer diesel over petrol because of mileage and better economics but things are starting to change as the registration of electric vehicles surpasses diesel vehicles in the district. In the first five months of 2023, 6501 EVs were registered compared to 4521 diesel vehicles during the same time, which is more than 30 percent and it is a huge difference. The penetration of electric vehicles is more in rural areas than in cities which is good as it is usually urban areas that accept new technologies quicker.

The biggest difference between EVs and diesel vehicle registration is in North Paravur as 886 EVs were registered against 369 diesel vehicles in the first five months. One of the reasons for this big shift is that North Paravur is on the outskirts of Kochi city and it takes around just 20 to 30 min to reach City, which is more than capable for modern electric vehicles. Perumbavoor and Mattancherry are also close behind North Paravur in EV adaptation while the least difference is in Kothamangalam as 199 EVs were registered compared to 186 diesel vehicles in the same period.

Since October 2022, more than 200 electric vehicles are registered every month by Ernakulam RTO except for the month of January 2023. Another reason for the big boom of electric vehicles in Ernakulam is that there are so many two-wheeler electric vehicles available in the market and they are priced very aggressively compared to established manufacturers which lure customers but most of these products won’t last a couple of years as either they have battery complaints or the service will be poor. But the shift from combustion vehicles to electric is evident and it is good for the environment too.
