Diesel Engines On Tata Altroz And Nexon Won’t Live Long

Tata Motors is the only manufacturer which offers a diesel engine in the hatchback segment on the Altroz and this same engine also does duty on the Nexon, Hyundai discontinued the diesel engine on the i20 but the Venue and Sonet continue to get the diesel engine option. The Indian manufacturer used Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) to make the 1.2 L diesel engine comply with the new BS6 emission norms which is less expensive compared to the conventional methods.

According to experts in the Industry, the 1.2 L diesel engine met the emission norms with the tiniest of margins and this solution won’t be able to meet the upcoming stricter emission norms but Tata Motors was determined to get it through this time as they want to offer the diesel engine option as there are customers still prefer the frugal and torquey diesel engine over the petrol or CNG options as there is no other alternative option for the prospective customers.

Tata Motors is well aware that the advantage will be gone once the new set of emission norms kicks in. But we are expecting the diesel engines to be offered with bigger models like Harrier and Safari to continue as they come with a 2.0 L engine sourced from FCA and the American manufacturer is committed to making this engine meet future emission norms as it already does duty on many models like the Jeep Compass, Meridian and Citroen C5 Aircross.
