The IMV 0 concept is not an entirely new endeavor; it has its roots in the renowned IMV project that brought us legends like the Hilux, Fortuner, and Innova.
Although initially envisioned as a pick-up truck, the IMV 0 brings a new-age twist by offering “boundless customization possibilities.” Its modular design allows for various bodies to be attached to the flat-bed section, transforming it into a food truck, a coffee bar, a camper for safaris, or even a mountain rescue ambulance. Its boxy design exudes a charming retro appeal. Affordability is at the heart of the IMV 0, representing Toyota’s response to the rising costs of its pick-up trucks and SUVs. Toyota aims to curtail expenses through design optimization, the use of lighter materials, and simplification of equipment and features.
While reducing features and equipment might raise concerns, Toyota believes that many ASEAN region customers will prioritize utility and cost savings over luxurious features. Moreover, Toyota hints at the potential expansion of the IMV 0 platform to include an SUV body style, akin to the Fortuner, thus addressing the growing demand for more affordable SUVs. As for the powertrain, the IMV 0 is expected to offer a 2.4-liter diesel engine from the Innova lineup, catering to those seeking a more economical option. It will also feature a strong hybrid variant, possibly a souped-up version of the 2.0 hybrid used in the Innova Hycross. However, due to its body-on-frame structure, the IMV 0 won’t support full electrification.
The IMV 0 pick-up is scheduled for launch in 2025, primarily targeting the ASEAN market where pick-ups enjoy immense popularity. This more budget-friendly option is also anticipated to make its way to India as a cost-effective alternative to the expensive Hilux. Although there’s no official confirmation, the SUV variant is expected to follow a year after the pick-up’s release, promising to bring affordability back to the world of Toyota’s SUVs. The exact pricing for these models is yet to be determined, but the IMV 0 is set to make owning a Toyota SUV more accessible for many.
