Kia Revives Manual Transmission for Seltos and Sonet Diesel Variants

Kia is set to bring back manual transmission options for the diesel variants of its popular Seltos and Sonet models, according to insider reports. The move comes as a response to relatively low sales of the diesel iMT (Intelligent Manual Transmission) variants, indicating that many customers still prefer the familiarity of a conventional manual gearbox. The iMT was initially introduced as an innovative upgrade for several Kia and Hyundai models. It allowed for clutchless gearshifts, offering a convenient and modern driving experience. However, the learning curve associated with this technology appears to have deterred some customers who are accustomed to traditional manual transmissions.

Both the Seltos and Sonet share the same 1.5-litre CRDi VGT diesel engine, delivering 116 PS of maximum power and 250 Nm of peak torque. Currently, customers have a choice between a 6-speed iMT and a 6-speed automatic transmission for these diesel variants. In contrast, the petrol engine options differ between the Seltos and Sonet. The Seltos offers a 1.5-litre NA petrol engine producing 115 PS and 144 Nm, with transmission options including a 6-speed manual and an IVT gearbox. Additionally, the Seltos offers a more powerful 1.5-litre turbo petrol unit generating 160 PS and 253 Nm, with 6-speed iMT and 7-speed DCT choices.

The Sonet, on the other hand, provides a 1.2-litre NA petrol engine with 83 PS and 115 Nm, mated exclusively to a 5-speed manual transmission. The 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine variant produces 120 PS and 172 Nm and offers either a 6-speed iMT or a 7-speed DCT. With the festive season in full swing, Kia is eager to reintroduce manual transmission options for the diesel Seltos and Sonet as soon as possible. Both models face intense competition in the compact SUV segment and have encountered challenges from rivals. While the Seltos has traditionally secured a strong second-place ranking behind the Hyundai Creta, the Sonet has faced even stronger headwinds due to the entry of new competitors.

The decision to bring back the manual transmission for diesel variants may help Kia regain its competitive edge in this segment, offering customers the option they are more familiar with. Additionally, the Sonet is scheduled to receive a facelift, featuring new features like Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), which could further enhance its appeal. While the iMT transmission offers the convenience of clutchless gearshifts, it has its unique challenges. Users may face issues with gear changes at low speeds, and the gearbox may not be suitable for hilly terrains. In comparison, traditional manual transmissions are simpler to use and offer a greater sense of control for drivers.
