Jeep To Re-Introduce Petrol Engine With Compass

Jeep discontinued the 1.4 L petrol engine earlier this year as it didn’t meet the BS6 Phase-II norms which kicked in from May onwards. The discontinuation of the petrol engine has affected the sales of Compass as the company sold more than 500 units before the deletion of the petrol engine and since the diesel-only option, sales have come down to 250 units, which is a decrease of 50 percent as the Compass sales have been always equally split between both engine options.

Globally, the company replaced the 1.4 L petrol engine with a new 1.3 L turbo petrol engine during the introduction of the facelift model back in 2020 but the Indian management continued to offer the old engine and they didn’t update it either. Now the American manufacturer has appointed Aditya Jairaj as head and he is taking a different approach compared to his predecessor as he wants to increase sales. The reintroduction of petrol engines will certainly help Compass bring back its market share.

The 1.3 L turbo petrol engine produces 130 hp of power when mated to a 6-speed manual and 150 hp mated to 6-speed DCT gearbox, both with front-wheel drive option only. This engine needs to be homologated and tested for Indian conditions which will take at least 18-24 months as this engine is expected to be launched in India by 2025 but this is the same time when the next-generation Compass arrives globally so we could see this engine only with the new model until then the Compass will be diesel only.
