Is MG Comet Safer Than Toyota Innova

MG Comet EV is one of the smallest cars currently available in the market. Even though the platform has been proven overseas the lack of safety ratings has raised some eyebrows about the safety of the Comet. But a real-life incident has shed some light on the concerns as a video has emerged of a Comet accident with a Toyota Innova Hycross. The video was taken by another road user and it shows the MG Comet crashed into the Toyota Innova Hycross from the rear as the Innova Hycross has substantial rear-end damage while the Comet’s damage compared to the Innova is minor.

We don’t know exactly how the incident happened but the Comet driver appears to didn’t brake. But the passengers on both these vehicles remain safe as we can see them standing beside the road and the driver of the Innova driving the vehicle to the side. Both these models have GJ number plates so the incident could have taken on the Gujarat highway. Like the Comet, the Toyota Innova Hycross is also not yet crash-tested and over the years, we have seen several big accidents involving the Innova as the safety offered by India’s favourite MPV is not great.

One of the most famous incidents with the Innova is the accident of famous actor Jagathy Sreekumar as his Innova hit the median, both he and the driver narrowly escaped death but this shows the poor build quality of the MPV. Another incident with the Innova took the life of a famous violinist Balabhaskar as his MPV was involved in a highway accident. We can point out many such incidents over the years but still, the manufacturer is not improving the safety of Innova as it is the best-selling model in its segment.

When we compare the Innova with the safety track record of Comet, we couldn’t find many such incidents. Recently in Kochi, the Comet fell on a ditch near the Oberon Mall but the occupants all survived without any injuries. Despite the size, MG has put in lot of effort into the safety of the Comet as it uses a high-strength vehicle body with 17 hot stamping panels, ensuring the overall structure is strong. Along with this, both the battery and vehicle undergo 39 stringent tests to further make sure everyone is safer. So the question arises whether the MG Comet is safer than the Toyota Innova Crysta, lets wait for the official Bharat NCAP ratings for the judgement but we certainly hope that Toyota will make improvements for the Innova to make it a safer car.
