Good Bye To Audi’s Confusing Naming Scheme

Audi has made a significant decision to bid goodbye to its confusing naming scheme, which has confounded consumers since its introduction in 2017. The pioneering move toward simplification was unveiled with the recent introduction of the Q6 E-Tron, signalling a departure from the perplexing double-digit nomenclature across its lineup. Initially based on power output, the naming system employed two-digit combinations ranging from “30” to “70,” accompanied by traditional badges like TFSI, TDI, and Quattro.

Florian Hauser, Audi’s Head of Sales & Product Marketing for Battery Electric Vehicles, confirmed the transition away from the confusing nomenclature, emphasizing the company’s commitment to streamlining model offerings. The unveiling of the Q6 E-Tron exemplifies this shift, with subsequent models following suit. Notably, the Q8 E-Tron has already adopted the simplified naming convention, forgoing the cumbersome double-digit labels on its tailgate. The transition to a more intuitive naming strategy extends beyond electric vehicles to encompass Audi’s entire lineup, including gasoline and diesel cars. While the two-digit designations will be removed from vehicle exteriors, the extent to which the previous nomenclature will be eliminated from configurators and marketing materials remains uncertain.

Further changes are on the horizon, with Audi’s commitment to transitioning models like the A4 to the A5 and the A6 to the A7. This shift will align odd-numbered designations with combustion engine vehicles and even numbers with electric vehicles, creating space for forthcoming battery-powered iterations of the A4 and A6. Despite these transformative shifts, Audi remains dedicated to providing a diverse range of vehicles, ensuring competitiveness in key segments like the sedan market. While future developments will unveil Audi’s complete departure from its previous naming scheme, consumers can anticipate a more intuitive and coherent lineup from the esteemed automaker.
