Confirmed: Toyota Fortuner To Get Mild-Hybrid System In 2024

Toyota Fortuner and Hilux are the two models which are yet to be updated to the new generation of their respective models but the company is working on an update for both these models while the next generation is still some time away, until then the Japanese manufacturer will introduce mild-hybrid models and it will be launched in 2024 as it was confirmed by Leon Theron, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Toyota South Africa.

The Hilux and Fortuner are based on the old IMV platform of Toyota as now most of the modern SUV or pickup trucks from the company are based on the TNGA-F platform, which underpins the new-generation Land Cruiser and Lexus LX models. This platform is designed for both ICE and electric powertrains. The Japanese manufacturer hasn’t revealed many details about the mild-hybrid powertrain and we can expect more information in the coming months.

The implementation of a mild-hybrid system is expected to be the same as other models in Toyota’s lineup. The Hilux and Fortuner are powered by a 2.8 L diesel engine producing 204 hp and 500 Nm of torque. This engine is mated to manual or automatic gearbox options. Toyota is focusing on hybrid models as they believe that moving forward to electric vehicles is not the only solution to reduce carbon footprint but the company is also developing electric vehicles too.
