By Toyota is set to unveil the U.S.-bound 2024 Land Cruiser at the upcoming Japan Mobility Show, but this won’t be your typical LC 250. The highlight of this Land Cruiser is the innovative “NEO Steer” system, which replaces the traditional round steering wheel with a yoke-like control. Taking inspiration from motorcycle handlebars, this unique steering system integrates the controls for acceleration and braking, eliminating the need for traditional pedals. The yoke steering wheel, resembling those found on aircraft and some electric vehicles, enables hand-operated driving. It’s a groundbreaking feature that opens up the possibility for individuals with lower limb impairments to comfortably operate the vehicle.
The acceleration and brake controls are conveniently mounted on the right side of the yoke, allowing for a more accessible and user-friendly driving experience. Additionally, this design facilitates easier entry and exit from the vehicle, making it a versatile and inclusive option for a wide range of drivers. While this innovation might be new for Toyota’s Land Cruiser, the company’s luxury division, Lexus, has previously explored yoke-style steering with a steer-by-wire system in its RZ electric crossover as an alternative to the traditional steering wheel.
It’s worth noting that Toyota is not the first Japanese automaker to introduce accessibility-focused features. Mazda, for instance, has been offering its lineup of “Self-empowerment Driving Vehicles” for some time. Models such as the 2, MX-30, CX-5, and even the iconic MX-5 Miata, available in both soft-top and RF versions, come with a lever mounted next to the center console to replace traditional pedals. Special steering wheels with built-in knobs for one-handed steering are also available for these vehicles.
The 2023 Japan Mobility Show promises to be an exciting event for Toyota, as the automaker will showcase a range of cutting-edge concepts, many of which are electric. These concepts include the zero-emission Land Cruiser Se, a pickup truck set to rival the Ford Maverick, and even a sports car that bids farewell to combustion engines in favor of electric propulsion. Toyota continues to push the boundaries of innovation in the automotive industry, with a strong emphasis on inclusivity and electric mobility.
