For Nissan, the iconic V-Motion grille has been a defining feature in the United States for over a decade. Originating in 2010 with the diminutive V-Motion grille on the original Juke, it underwent a transformative evolution in 2015, culminating in version 2.0 showcased on the Vmotion 2.0 concept, later making its mark on the Maxima. However, with Nissan’s resolute shift towards an electrified future, a landscape characterized by fewer grilles, the V-Motion motif may not play a leading role in the company’s design ethos going forward.
According to Alfonso Albaisa, Nissan’s Vice President for Global Design, the team is veering away from a literal interpretation of the V-Motion. “There’s a little bit left, but no, we’re not using these motifs so literally,” Albaisa affirms. Recent updates on models like the Versa and Rogue reflect this departure, as the once-prominent silver “V” accent now assumes a more subtle role. The broader V shape, a hallmark of the Ariya, has taken precedence. Nissan’s design philosophy is undergoing a paradigm shift, driven by the imperatives of electrification. Albaisa emphasizes that while efficiency is paramount, style remains a pivotal factor in vehicle design.
The advent of electric vehicles has prompted a reevaluation of aerodynamics, subtly influencing the positioning of the front fascia. Albaisa notes, “We used to be able to put the nose wherever we want. All of the cars you see today, the nose is moving up a bit because we’re taking air under the nose.” He acknowledges the initial tendency of EVs to adopt a somewhat uniform, streamlined profile, but anticipates a pushback towards more diverse and distinctive designs. With a burgeoning lineup of 13 or 14 forthcoming EVs, Nissan is poised to introduce a spectrum of styles, some exuding a sleeker aesthetic while others carve out a niche with their unique flair. The demand for innovation in design is palpable, as consumers clamor for a fresh, forward-looking approach in the realm of electric mobility.
