Suzuki officially launched the new-generation Swift in the Japanese market as it is the first country to get the fourth generation of the hatchback. The Japanese manufacturer showcased the Concept version of the Swift at the Tokyo Motor Show and most of the details have been revealed except for the engine. The new Swift will replace the K12 C series 1.2 L petrol engine, instead of this the company will introduce a new Z-series Z12E engine, a 1.2 three-cylinder petrol engine with a 48V mild-hybrid system.
This engine produces 82 hp of power at 5,700 rpm and 108 Nm of torque at 4,500 rpm. The mild-hybrid system adds 3.1 hp of power and 60 Nm of torque. The hybrid engine is mated to a CVT automatic transmission and in the Japanese market, Suzuki also offers a four-wheel drive system and a 5-speed manual gearbox option. Suzuki also offers a non-hybrid version of the Swift, which is only offered in the base-spec trim. The hybrid engine returns 24.5 kmpl and the regular version gives 23.4 kmpl.
In India, we are not expecting the company to offer a four-wheel drive system and CVT will certainly improve the drivability of the engine. We have already seen the new Swift extensively tested across different parts of the country and our eagle eye reader recently spotted the model in Kerala too. The India launch of the new Swift is expected to take place by the middle of next year as it is one of the most important launches of Maruti Suzuki next year along with the introduction its first electric vehicle.
