Mahindra is going to launch the 5-door version of the Thar in the coming months and it is likely to be named Armada. According to dealer sources, the Thar Armada will be available with a new 1.5-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine, similar to the one powering the 3-door Thar RWD. This engine, which produces 117 horsepower and 300 Nm of torque in the 3-door variant, will likely serve as the entry-level powerplant for the Thar 5-Door. However, it remains to be seen if it will be offered in the same state of tune.
The introduction of the 1.5-litre diesel engine with a 2WD option aims to position the Thar 5-Door competitively in the midsize SUV segment, targeting customers of models like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. This strategic move will also make the Thar 5-Door a rugged, five-seat alternative to Mahindra’s own Scorpio N. Higher variants of the Thar Armada are expected to feature more powerful engines, including the 175 hp, 2.2-litre diesel, and the 203 hp, 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engines borrowed from the Scorpio N.
Both 4WD and 2WD options will be available, catering to a wide range of customer preferences, with choices between manual and automatic transmissions. Although Mahindra has yet to officially open bookings for the Thar Armada, dealers have started accepting unofficial reservations. Customers can secure their Thar 5-Door with booking amounts ranging from Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000, depending on the dealership. The 5-door version of the Thar is expected to bring in really good numbers for Mahindra.
