BYD Planning To Introduce Three New Models In India

BYD is one of the fastest-growing electric vehicle manufacturers in the country as the company recently launched the Seal, which has become the talk of the town with its price. Now the company is planning to continue the positive momentum with the launch of new models. According to new reports, BYD is going to introduce three new models in the Indian market. The upcoming models, still under evaluation, include the Tang seven-seat SUV, Seal U SUV, and Sea Lion SUV. These models have already proven successful in international markets and are expected to contribute significantly to BYD’s Indian portfolio.

G Sanjay, senior vice president of BYD India, envisions capturing a substantial share of the Indian EV market, aiming to serve over 85 per cent of it within the next three years. To achieve this goal, BYD plans to establish more outlets across high-demand areas, ensuring widespread availability of their EVs. Moreover, BYD is considering local assembly in India for its future models. Assembling EVs locally not only attracts lower taxes, with only a 5 per cent GST compared to 28 per cent on internal combustion engine (ICE) cars but also reduces customs duties, making BYD’s cars more competitively priced in the Indian market.

The company has also applied for a trademark for the Dolphin hatchback, hinting at its intentions to introduce more affordable EVs tailored to Indian consumers’ preferences. Sanjay envisions India becoming BYD’s biggest market in the region, surpassing even Japan in the long run. While local assembly isn’t imminent, BYD is strategically assessing the right timing for its implementation, keeping in mind the market dynamics and regulatory environment. We can expect aggressive pricing for its future models too.
